[SAN FRANCISCO, May 24,2023—] Our Family Coalition has made the decision to deactivate our Twitter accounts immediately due to Twitter quietly removing its longstanding policy aimed at protecting transgender people from targeted misgendering and deadnaming.
Deadnaming and misgendering trans and non-binary community members is a form of hate speech. Our Family Coalition advances equity for the full and expanding spectrum of LGBTQ families and children through support, education, and advocacy.
We have a strong commitment to create an inclusive and just world where all LGBTQ families and children have visibility and opportunities to thrive as valued participants in our schools, institutions, and communities. And having this commitment means also working with institutions and organizations that share our values.
With more than 430 pieces of legislation targeting healthcare, education, public places and services, Pride and drag performers, queer history, in 2023 we cannot be complicit in our actions and work.
The Twitter landscape has become an increasingly unsafe platform for LGBTQ and BIPOC people to use. Anti-trans and anti-LGBTQ tweets have greatly increased, as well as anti-Black and antisemitic tweets that are published under the guise of "free speech." Further, the organization continues to boast unhealthy and illegal labor practices. What’s more, Elon Musk, the chief of Twitter, promoted an anti-trans tweet about the recent Nashville Covenant School shooting, which is the latest in a series of transphobic tweets.
While we are moving away from Twitter, we also understand that the other available platforms such as Meta (Facebook/Instagram) have also had harmful policies targeting BIPOC communities. While we do not defend their actions, we do appreciate their commitment to learning and addressing their gaps.
