We’re excited to share that California has passed SB 729, a monumental step forward for LGBTQ+ families and all individuals seeking to build their families through assisted reproductive technology. This new law mandates that health insurers cover in vitro fertilization (IVF) treatments, opening doors for millions who previously faced financial barriers.
SB 729 is particularly significant because it eliminates the previous requirement that patients must be trying to conceive naturally for a year before qualifying for coverage. This change directly benefits same-sex couples and individuals who have historically been marginalized in reproductive healthcare. As Governor Gavin Newsom noted, this law empowers Californians to make their own choices about family-building, especially as access to IVF has been challenged at the national level.
Once fully implemented, approximately 9 million people will gain access to IVF, significantly increasing the number who can pursue their family dreams without overwhelming costs. Currently, only about a third of those individuals have coverage, so this legislation is a game-changer in promoting equality in healthcare.
Our Family Coalition is proud to have been involved in advocating for this bill, working alongside diverse organizations to ensure that all families have the opportunity to thrive. This victory is not just about healthcare access; it’s a statement of our commitment to inclusive policies that reflect the needs of our community.
Thank you to everyone who supported this initiative. Together, we’re making a brighter future for all families!
